Opening doors to Cambridge through a Diversity Day at Downing College

The news

Thirty students from Azhar Academy Girls School, Denbigh High School in Luton and The Forest Academy explored university life at Downing College, Cambridge, on 14 October, through a Naz Legacy Foundation Diversity Day supported by The COSARAF Charitable Foundation.

The visit gave students an opportunity to discover Cambridge, ask questions about higher education and meet current students whose experiences helped bring university life into focus.

The day began with a panel featuring recipients of the Sheikh Family Scholarships at Downing College. Visiting students asked about everything from subject choices to accommodation, hearing first-hand about studying and living at Cambridge. It was also an opportunity for our scholars to share their experiences and encourage younger students to consider their own ambitions.

Following lunch at the College, the group visited the Museum of Zoology for a workshop exploring climate change and the environment. Working in teams, students discussed conservation and the challenges facing the natural world.

A walking tour led by current students offered a closer look at Downing’s grounds, library and chapel, alongside insights into the history of Cambridge and everyday college life. The visit concluded with a question-and-answer session with an admissions tutor, helping students better understand the application process and the subjects available.

COSARAF’s support for Diversity Days reflects our commitment to widening opportunity through education. Bringing school students together with Sheikh Family Scholars creates a valuable connection between those considering university and those already navigating that journey.

Our thanks go to Naz Legacy Foundation, Teodor Wator, Dr Kamran Yunus and the team at Downing College for making this engaging and informative visit possible.
