Who we are

Downing College is a unique academic community: diverse, close-knit and committed. The College’s purpose is to provide a world-class education to the students with the most potential in each subject, whatever their means or social background.
The College is one of 31 colleges within the University of Cambridge, which is consistently ranked among the top universities in the world.
With 225 years of history, set amidst 20 acres of magnificent grounds in the heart of the city, the College is a community of committed scholars and students, current and future leaders in their fields.
We believe in the transformative power of a world-class education.
Our project
Sheikh Family Scholarships
The Sheikh Family Scholarship supports underprivileged Muslim students through top universities. One Zakat funded award is made each year to eligible students enrolled at Downing.
Open to Downing’s UK Muslim undergraduate students in their first years who face financial hardship and, ideally, are the first in their family to attend university. Priority will be given to those for whom the award will make most difference and who demonstrate a clear plan to give back to their communities and wider society.
Master of Downing College, Professor Graham Virgo KC (Hon), said: “We are immensely grateful to the COSARAF Foundation for its generous financial support for some of our students at Downing College. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to ensuring that the most talented students can thrive, regardless of their circumstances. By widening access to the opportunities offered by our College and the University, this financial support will help enrich our academic community and support students to realise their ambitions, whilst in Cambridge and beyond.“
