Jonika cares for her 10-year-old daughter, Sangida, who has cerebral palsy. Her husband works as a daily labourer, and the family faces ongoing financial difficulties. Despite these challenges, Jonika is unwavering in her care for Sangida and brings her to the Community Caring Centre, run by Carers Worldwide and their partner in Bangladesh, Centre for Disability in Development (CDD), daily for therapy and support.
Sangida’s condition affects her mobility and communication. From a young age, Jonika recognised the need for consistent care and took on the full responsibility of her daughter’s development and well-being. Limited resources made access to specialised services difficult, but Jonika remained determined.
During the holy month of Ramadan, Jonika and Sangida received support from the COSARAF Foundation. Through the initiative, both Jonika and Sangida received eye treatment, and each received a pair of spectacles – an intervention which brought immediate impact. “It was like a light turned on in Sangida’s world,” Jonika recalled. “She looked at me and smiled. That moment meant everything.”
In addition, they were invited to an Iftar gathering, offering them a rare opportunity for social connection and celebration. Nutritional food packages also eased their daily burden, providing essential items to support Sangida’s health during Ramadan. “We sometimes struggle to afford all the things Sangida needs, and the food packages helped us provide her with healthy meals during a very important month” Jonika shared.
Beyond the programme, Jonika is a passionate advocate for unpaid family carers. She participates actively in advocacy workshops organised by CDD and Carers Worldwide. With a stronger understanding of her rights, she now raises her voice for inclusive healthcare and mental health support for children with disabilities and their carers.
“Our journey is still ongoing,” Jonika said. “But we are walking forward, step by step, with hope.”
