Issac lives in Butula, Western Kenya and has been supported by our partner Advantage Africa with their Transition from School for Children with Intellectual Disabilities project.
Issac lost both his parents when he was a small child, and he has been raised by his grandmother, together with his five siblings. He has moderate learning disabilities and is now 23 years old. Issac has a passion for handicrafts,
especially beadwork and his teachers have helped him master this skill to a point where he is now making high quality bracelets, necklaces and handbags which sell in the local market. This occupation not only offers Issac a source of income but also boosts his self-confidence and sense of personal fulfilment.
Issac at home with his grandmother has had his three teachers conduct a home visit. These visits are a key part of the transition process, helping to build a clear understanding of the family’s circumstances, ideas and potential opportunities.
In March 2025 Isaac successfully completed his transition from school to home life. With support from a small project grant, he is actively involved in subsistence farming whilst also creating beaded products for sale. These items are sold at the local market through his grandmother’s small shop, providing him with an occupation and allowing him to
contribute to the household income.
