Widening access at Warwick

The second Diversity Day was kindly hosted by the University of Warwick on Thursday 9th November.

The Diversity Days Programme, delivered by our partner Naz Legacy Foundation to raise aspirations and expand the horizons on young people, held it’s second day for this academic year, on Thursday 9th November.  22 students, from three different senior schools in London, with pupils attending from year 10 and year 11, were hosted for the day by the University of Warwick.

The students attending were welcomed in the award winning Faculty of Arts building, at the campus.  This building, whilst home to the arts, is also open to students, with breakout rooms for studying and areas for recreation.

A short introduction to studying History at degree level by Dr. Rosie Doyle, was followed by Sheerah, a second year Computer Science student and University Ambassador, talking about his journey to Warwick, covering all aspects from UCAS applications, to course content and accommodation, with an engaging Q&A session.

The group was split into two, and were led on campus tours by scholars of Engineering and Economics.  The young people visited the Arts Centre, library, chaplaincy and lecture theatres in the Chemistry Department as well as workshops in the Department for Engineering.

They then met a Sheikh Family Scholar, Hafsa, who spoke about her unique educational journey to Warwick and our Foundation Manager shared an introduction of the COSARAF Foundation and the support we offer through our Sheikh Family Scholarships Programme.

The young people were engaged throughout the day, from seeing scholars and students that either came from similar backgrounds and looked like them, to realising that university could be a real option for them, something that many had not considered before today.

The Diversity Day definitely widened the options for the young people attending at Warwick, and had one young girl saying that she could see herself as a ‘uni girl’, something she hasn’t thought about before.
