On Friday 17th October, we hosted our annual Sheikh Scholars’ Leadership Day at the beautiful Downing College, University of Cambridge, bringing together this year’s Family Scholars from St Anne’s College, Oxford, Downing College, Cambridge, and the University of Warwick for a day of reflection, discovery, and development.
The day formed a central part of the Sheikh Family Scholarship Programme, which provides financial support and personal development opportunities to outstanding Muslim students studying at leading UK universities. Beyond academic excellence, the programme is designed to nurture scholars’ leadership potential — equipping them with the confidence, self-awareness, and purpose to make a meaningful difference in their communities and beyond.
The session was led by Stuart Duff, Partner and Head of Development at Pearn Kandola, who has supported the programme since its inception. Stuart guided the scholars through an interactive workshop exploring the meaning of leadership, the qualities that define effective leaders, and how self-knowledge forms the foundation of authentic leadership.
Through a mix of discussion, reflection, and practical exercises, scholars were encouraged to examine their own values, motivations, and leadership styles. Many described the day as “enlightening”, “inspiring”, and “transformational”, gaining a deeper understanding not only of leadership, but also of themselves.
