Inspiring Year 10's at Oxford

The news

St Anne’s College, University of Oxford, hosted the annual Naz Legacy Foundation Diversity Day on Tuesday 21st October, bringing together students from three London schools for a day focused on exploring higher education opportunities and university life. The event was delivered in collaboration with St Anne’s College’s Outreach team.

A total of thirty students from year 10 and three teachers attended from Eastbrook School in Dagenham, Azhar Academy in Newham, and Al-Khair School in Croydon.

Students were welcomed with refreshments before an opening session led by representatives from the Naz Legacy Foundation, our Director, Tashmina and St Anne’s College. The morning continued with an Introduction to Higher Education session titled “University and Future Choices”, followed by a Q&A discussion with current Oxford students.

After the interactive discussion, the young people enjoyed a guided tour of St Anne’s College, gaining a first-hand look at student facilities, accommodation, and learning spaces.

After lunch, the afternoon featured a Student Life Workshop Carousel, where students took part in short, rotating sessions designed to highlight different aspects of university life and skills for academic success and then the young people joined a taster academic session, giving them an authentic experience of university-style teaching in Classics. The day finished with vibrant discussions during the taster session and positive feedback from both the students and support staff.

The Diversity Day forms part of our ongoing work to inspire and support young people from diverse backgrounds to explore higher education opportunities at leading universities across the UK.

Students described the visit to St Anne’s College as both inspiring and eye-opening. They particularly enjoyed learning about the admissions process, discovering the wide range of courses available at Oxford, and hearing directly from current students about university life. Many highlighted the Greek Mythology taster session as a memorable part of the day, noting how it helped them to analyse and engage with sources in new ways.

Their reflections captured the lasting impact of the visit, with comments including:
“I have seen the resources and activities that St Anne’s has to offer.”
“I have become more informed about universities and the opportunities ahead.”
“I will now be aiming to apply for Oxford as I really enjoyed today.”
