Supporting STEM careers for gifted girls

We have been supporting the African Gifted Foundation for a number of years now, annually sponsoring a female student , to complete their accelerated studies in further education to access university for careers in STEM.

This year we supported Hamdallah, read her story...

I am thankful that I get to study at the African Science Academy (ASA). Before coming here, things had become difficult for my parents after I graduated from secondary school. They couldn’t afford to send me and my twin brother to school so I was asked to stay at home so that my twin brother could attend university. I was discouraged and had given up on education. I was afraid I would end up like my older sister, who had no one to support her after secondary school and had to be betrothed to someone to care for her. I was overjoyed when I found out that I’d been given the opportunity to attend ASA because it restored my hope for education and brought joy to my family.

Studying at ASA is a great honour. It is not easy but the teachers are very supportive and they answer any question I ask even if it seems ‘silly’. We also have a Raising Attainment Group (RAG) here at ASA, which I attend whenever I don’t understand something in class. I also appreciate the fact that we are given laptops. This is my first time using a laptop but thanks to the ASA staff they’ve taught me how to work with it and I am very grateful for that. The laptop has really helped me with my academics. I use it to watch videos when I don’t get something in class and the Integral Math website suggested by our teachers has been helpful to me.

"I aspire to be a mechanical engineer. I want to inspire my fellow young girls, especially Muslim girls interested in STEM. I want to be the first female Ghanaian to build a hyperloop. This, I believe, will be a solution to Ghana and Africa's traffic problems."

So far I am enjoying my time at ASA! Last term, we had our first exams and it was challenging since I was still adjusting to the new curriculum. But thanks to the teachers who showed us how to answer questions and past papers, which I had never done before, I was awarded the highest performance in pure math for the August 2022 assessment.  I am happy that ASA accepts all religious beliefs and even sees to it that I pray all my five daily prayers without any interference. Moreover, I have even seen my interest in computer programming grow. I always feel happy to see the end result of my coding.

I also love that I get to explore my love for creativity through my extra-curricular activities. I am currently a member of the ‘Cool Creatives Club’. With this club and the resources provided
by ASA, we are able to create, paint and design anything in mind. This has developed my innovative skills. Additionally, the guest speaker sessions have also helped me to identify which
schools and programs to choose when applying to universities. I am very grateful for these sessions and to ASA for them.
